Guidance & Counseling Services

The four components of the Texas developmental guidance and counseling program are implemented by:

    • A guidance curriculum to help students develop their full educational potential, including the student’s interests and career objectives.
    • A responsive services component to intervene on behalf of any student whose immediate personal concerns or problems put the student’s continued educational or social development at risk.
    • An individual planning system to guide a student as the student plans, monitors, and manages the student’s own educational, career, personal and social development.
    • System support to support the efforts of teachers, staff, parents, and other community members in promoting the development of students.

Individual and Small Group School Counseling

    • Individual School Counseling

Individual school counseling does not take the place of professional counseling.

The goal of individual school counseling is to provide the student with support and guidance to help them become and remain academically successful.

Our school counselors and administrators discuss with parents/guardians the goal of individual school counseling before making this request.

Individual school counseling should follow a six week rotation with few exceptions.

There will be times when individual school counseling will be added to a student's Special Education IEP. This type of support and guidance may take longer than six weeks.

Individual school counseling should be conducted during the students' lunch time or non-core course periods if possible.

Parent permission is needed in order for students to participate in individual counseling.

    • Small Group Counseling

Small group counseling is done at the request of the parent/guardian, teacher, or administrator.

A few examples of small group topics include:

      • Friendship
      • Study Skills
      • Following the Rules
      • Divorce
      • Positive Ways to Deal with Anger

Small Groups should follow a six week rotation.

An effective small group should only include 6 to 8 students.

Small groups should be conducted during the students' lunch time or non-core course periods if possible.

Parent permission is needed in order for students to participate in small group counseling.
